How being made redundant transformed my life

A decade ago, I stood at a pivotal crossroads as I faced unexpected redundancy after just nine months in my role. Surprisingly, a wave of relief washed over me at that moment, granting me the chance to breathe again. Little did I know, this unfortunate turn of events would become the catalyst for the most transformative period of my life.

Before the redundancy, I had been grappling with a growing sense of displacement. The uncertainty about my next steps took a toll on my confidence and self-esteem, turning each day into a struggle.

I was lost, and change was long overdue.

This is when I discovered the power of coaching and simultaneously embarked on my own coaching journey. Understanding the 'why' behind things is crucial to me, and this coaching experience empowered me, reigniting my confidence and self-esteem.

When a senior position was offered to me, I seized the opportunity, albeit for the wrong reasons, ignoring the red flags. The new role only heightened my anxiety, and I felt trapped on a path that wasn't right for me.

However, redundancy changed everything.

It was a chance to reset and bring about real change. Thanks to the clarity gained from coaching, I swiftly identified my true calling and received two promising job offers within a week.

Choosing the path that led me to where I am today was empowering and liberating.

Reflecting on this journey, here are some invaluable lessons learned:

  1. Red flags matter: Acknowledge the signs. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Listen to your body and ask questions when needed.

2. You are in control: Take charge of your life. Decisions about your path should ultimately align with your values and aspirations.

3. Leaving isn't the same as quitting: Sometimes saying no to a situation is saying yes to a better, more suitable opportunity.

4. Trust Your Instincts: Your gut feeling is a powerful guide. Trust it to lead you in the right direction.

5. Prioritise Mental and Physical Health: Your well-being should always be a priority. Don't compromise it for the sake of external expectations.

6. Open Communication is Key: There's no shame in admitting when you're in the wrong environment. Don't hesitate to seek support and share your struggles.

Are you finding yourself at a crossroads, unsure of which direction to take?

Remember, you don't have to take that first step alone.
