Updated: Jul 21, 2023

Are you spending hours scrolling through job boards without finding any inspiration?

You're not alone. Many people struggle with this phase of their career coaching journey. But don't worry! There are ways to get unstuck and start generating new career ideas that will excite and motivate you.

Here are five tips to help you get started:

1️- Let go of your fears When brainstorming new ideas, it's important to focus on what's possible and not worry too much about the practicalities. Don't be too concerned about how you will achieve something at this stage. Remember, you are just generating ideas, not applying for a new job yet. Try to detach yourself from the 'how' and have fun exploring the 'what.'

2️- Collect data Be curious about everything! Think about the things that make you feel alive, from the books you like to read, the places you like to visit, to the skills you enjoy using. Write down a list of at least 30-35 things that resonate with you, from images to words.

3️- Be a detective Now that you have a long list of things, places, people that resonate with you, be curious about what they mean to you. Ask yourself questions like, "What do I love about this?" and "What if I had more of X or Y in my next role, what would that make me feel?" Dive deeper and explore what really appeals to you.

4️- Find your work theme Once you've gone through your list, you'll start to see some themes coming through. These themes could be things like wellbeing, helping others, or a love of nature. Pick 2-3 themes that really resonate with you.

5️- Create new possibilities Now that you've identified your themes, you're ready to generate lots of new possibilities and find new ways to express them. For example, if your themes are wellbeing and helping others, you might consider a career in health coaching or social work. Don't limit yourself to traditional job titles. There are many ways to combine your interests and skills to create a fulfilling career.

Remember, exploring new career ideas should be a fun and exciting journey. Don't be too hard on yourself and enjoy the process!
